The digital twin differentiation for Digitalization and IoT is that it is a true virtual representation of a physical product, the machines that produce the product, and the performance of the product once in the field. These three representations of the twin are used to understand and predict its physical counterpart’s performance characteristics to improve efficiency, minimize failure rates, shorten development cycles, and open up new business opportunities.
The power behind this simple idea, however, is that the digital twin must be integrated throughout the entire product lifecycle to gather and analyze the data in order to build intelligent models. Once that is done, you can begin to understand why something is happening. And adjust.
Can your automation supplier deliver an integrated digital twin? I would guess the answer is, “probably not.” Today in the US, most users are still buying an automation platform that was designed more than 20 years ago! How long can that continue before the user is left behind by those companies that adapted the digital future earlier.
