This is a huge consolidation in the world of building automation, as two well-established giants come together to combine Tyco’s $14bn security, surveillance and fire alarm portfolio with Johnson’s $23bn HVAC and building management business.
a company with this much leverage also has the potential to crown a winner in any one of the numerous ongoing standards wars – such as AllJoyn vs. IoTivity, or ZigBee vs. Thread (Tyco is as board member of the Thread Group, and Johnson is also a Thread member, as well as being a member of the AllSeen Alliance). There are currently a number of technologies vying for position in a few distinct market, but the combined leverage of Johnson and Tyco would go a long way towards endorsing a technology as a market leader. As the two are both prominent Thread advocates, this deal could well be a boon to the 802.15.4-based mesh networking protocol. While simply speculative, the potential impact on the IoT market that Johnson-Tyco will hold is very significant.
Consumer-facing security company ADT has previously signed a deal to use Tyco’s PowerMaster 360 Intrusion Gateways in the UK and South Africa. Those hubs feature WiFi and Z-Wave, with a cellular backup in case of outages. Near the end of 2014, Tyco launched Tyco On, an integrated data and smart services platform that Tyco aimed to use to connect its one-billion device plus installed footprint, as well as integrating third-party hardware and software into Tyco ecosystems.
