Since the change to COTS, users and suppliers have consumed significant amounts of time, resources and costs to manage the unanticipated consequences of Windows.
The user proponents of this initiative never want to be dependent upon one supplier for a control system, want to expand the number of suppliers for control system components and grow competition, want to be able to select best-in-class components from a variety of suppliers, want to be able to connect components from different suppliers in a single system, want to be able to take advantage of new technologies from any supplier and not be limited by what a single supplier could offer.
Another unanticipated and unintended consequence of OPA could be the elimination of Main Automation Contractor (MAC) services by the system suppliers.
In the OPA environment, control systems could consist of components from many different suppliers and the advantage previously held by the system suppliers goes away.
Another unanticipated and unintended consequence of OPA is that the suppliers who specialize in the designing control systems and exist because of their expertise in designing and manufacturing control systems will no longer be in this role for those adopting OPA.
Users wanting full control of the design and selection of control system components are not in the business of designing and manufacturing control systems and may not fully fill the gaps of the services and expertise historically provided by the system suppliers.
Will the pace of innovation continue at the current pace if the user replaces the system suppliers in the design of user’s control systems?
There could be other unintended and unanticipated consequences but these will only be identified by working through the mechanics of selecting components, designing, testing, certifying, installing and maintaining a system made of components from different suppliers
