With only about 0.1 million Wi-Fi hotspots compared to a global availability of 169 million, India offers immense scope for use of Public Wi-Fi as a means to build on broadband proliferation across the countryscape. NDCP's vision for atleast 10 million Public Wi-Fi hotspots in Indiaby 2022, backed by TRAI's progressive recommendations to the Government on Proliferation of Broadband through Public Wi-Fi networks, vindicate the immeasurable benefits it will bring forth to the citizens of India, the economy and the entire nation. The Federal Communications Commission's recent move to allocate 1.2 GHz of spectrum in the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use (to be used for Wi-Fi6) could also serve as a prudent example for India to follow in this direction.
Cultivating adequate Public Wi-Fi Service and access is in the interest of converting the people into 'digital citizens', delivering "Broadband for All" and to help realise 'Digital India'.
