When will we see driverless cars on the road?
There is uncertainty regarding the implementation timeframe for driverless cars to become established on the roads. The general consensus is that significant penetration will not occur until 2035, although aggressive projections suggest 2025 and conservative projections 2060 (or perhaps never). Many optimistic predictions are made by organisations involved in the manufacture of autonomous vehicle technology, or based on clumsy comparisons with other disruptive technologies such as personal computers, digital cameras and smartphones. Vehicles typically take much longer and are more expensive to design, test and develop, and rely more on public infrastructure than personal computers, digital cameras and smartphones. As a result, vehicle technologies tend to take longer to reach the market and involve more regulation than most other innovations. A transition phase is expected where cars with different levels of automation and connectivity will share the road.
