ITU news reported in relation to using frontier technologies such as AI and 5G to enhance the digital transformation of Africa that “Nigeria’s smart city initiatives aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and automate the provision of government services in fields such as health, education and transportation,” however, the barrier of constant power supply is cited further emphasising the need to scale the deployment of renewable energy to enable the widespread adoption of 5G generation in the region.
Moreover, a policy initiative to generate economic growth through AI and 5G digital technology could help stimulate employment in the EU where a north / south divide exists in relation to unemployment levels with employment opportunities limited in traditional sectors there are success stories in the region with the likes of Barcelona developing a tech startup scene alongside Madrid
