She has over 25 years of experience in IT research and has led many innovative projects in Healthcare and Transportation, especially catering to Emerging Markets.
Prior to that, she was a Principal Research Scientist at Hewlett Packard Laboratories for 17 years, and a member of the C-DAC team which built the first commercial supercomputer from India.
The work involved applying the core research in parallelization onto real systems, and coming up with new ideas to make things work in real life.
In 1997, Hewlett Packard Labs contacted me as they were interested to start a small research team in India.
I thought it was an opportunity to work with global researchers and joined HP Labs as an extended team member of their Palo Alto Labs.
New research in Data Mining and AI was starting off just then.
As I went through the preparation for the grilling interview process, course work and seminars, I realized that I could now understand the depth of the research papers easily and found myself thinking at the core of the idea rather than a few new engineering features.
Though it was extremely stressful to continue to work as well as do research in a place like IISc, I am so glad I made that decision.
By the time, I completed my PhD, I already had about 20 years of experience in the industry and so I was motivated to work only on problems that matter to business and/or society.
Concepts in Big Data are those I can easily relate to the work I did early in my career and the practical experience I have had in solving problems with distributed computing systems come handy to understand the issues there and appreciate any new invention in that space.
You have a vast experience working in corporate research teams and have also been a successful entrepreneur incubating your ideas.
With support from the senior management, I created a small team to solve this yet another research problem, but was putting my own weekends and personal time in the project
