The Internet of Things is global
To ensure that the Internet of Things is a success, we have to act in accordance with three principles:

        1. Global: the Internet of Things must cross all borders

        2. Open: “IoT” does not mean “Island of Things”

        3. Secure: Only security creates trust

Obviously enough, international supply chains now have to be able to function around the globe. For this reason, the technology standards for the Internet of Things have to be global. We can’t be working with different standards for different countries, such as Germany, France and the U.S. The need for this has at least been recognized. And we at Deutsche Telekom are working for such standards in the context of industry organizations such as GSMA, the global association of mobile network operators, and the 3GPP standardization body. And we are working with technology corporations, such as Intel, on the standards for 5G.

We reached agreement with Vodafone on a new project involving the first international roaming test of NarrowBand IOT technology in Europe. This test represents a major step toward a network providing seamless coverage and continuous service for millions of connections, a network of machines and sensors linking everything from containers on ocean-going ships to smart meters in home cellars. To ensure that the Internet of Things does not break off at borders and boundaries, we need industry-wide cooperation. While the cooperation we need may be new and unusual, it is absolutely necessary. We are doing our part, for example, by participating in the ngena global telecommunications alliance, in which we are working with other providers to interconnect our networks within a wide area network for the world. As it is, the Deutsche Telekom corporate network already reaches 200 countries
