A security researcher has uncovered a bug in WhatsApp that could’ve been exploited to take over the application through a video call.
The vulnerability deals with how WhatsApp processes video calls over Real-time Transport Protocol or RTP. Google security researcher Natalie Silvanovich discovered you can rig the RTP data packets in a way to trigger a memory corruption error in the messaging client.
She disclosed details about the vulnerability on Tuesday, saying it affected both Android and iOS versions of the app. Her post demonstrates how you can use the bug to crash the client in a few seconds over someone’s smartphone.
But the dangers don’t end there. On Twitter, Silvanovich said it’s possible the video call bug could be exploited to trigger WhatsApp to run other malicious functions. A separate Google security researcher named Tavis Ormandy warned the bug was so bad it could take over a WhatsApp client
